Earth Day 2022: Keeping Your Baby's Carbon Footprint Small
Share
When a baby is born, their teeny tiny feet measure at about 2.75 inches. At that very same moment, their carbon footprint on Earth is zero.
In Canada, one person’s carbon footprint is about 15.6 tonnes per year. That’s equal to the weight of 16 baby humpback whales. There is no doubt that humans have a huge impact on the environment. Parents today have an important responsibility to raise eco-conscious kids by empowering them with eco-conscious, hands-on experiences.
Here at Nest Designs, sustainability is always on the top of our minds. We care about your little bubs as much as we would our own. That’s why we work hard to keep their carbon footprints as small as their tiny feet are. In celebration of Earth Day this year, we’re sharing how we’re taking action as a company.
Earth Day 2022
Earth Day started in 1970 as a movement in the United States. It wasn’t until 1990, 20 years after, that the world took part in it. Today, it is celebrated by over 1 billion people worldwide, annually. This year, the global movement’s theme is Invest In Our Planet. The goal of Earth Day this year is to involve everyone - businesses, governments, and citizens worldwide - in a partnership to take action for the planet.
How Nest Designs is Taking Action
As a business in the fashion industry, we acknowledge its impact on the environment. Knowing that 57% of all discarded clothes end up in the landfill, we’ve made sure that the materials we choose are durable and can be passed from one child to another. The hand-drawn patterns are classic, minimalistic, and gender-neutral so they withstand the ever-changing trends.
These choices along with the materials we’ve chosen for our packaging and fabrics for our products have been carefully handpicked to make sure we keep our carbon footprint as small as possible.
EcoPure® Biodegradable Packaging
Packaging is a necessary part for us because the hygiene and safety of our products is important. The individual product packaging keeps our products dry - free of moisture and keeping them from growing any mould. However, plastic waste never decomposes in our environment and ends up in the ocean. When it does, it releases toxic chemicals and threatens the marine animals. That’s why we use EcoPure® for our packaging, a fully biodegradable material that is as tough as plastic but doesn't hurt our environment. EcoPure® produces carbon dioxide, safe biogas, and biomass when it breaks down unlike the toxic chemicals plastic produces.
Sustainable Fabrics
The fabrics we choose ensure that you’re giving your baby the very best. They meet criteria and certifications such as ECO CERT, OEKO, and antibacterial activity testing. Some of our eco-friendly fabrics include bamboo, GOTS certified organic cotton, Sorona®️, and tanboocel.
We love bamboo here because it’s so sustainable. Not only does the plant grow quickly but it also doesn’t require a ton of water, pesticides, and labour to cultivate it. The material is breathable, moisture wicking, thermal regulating, and fast drying - all to keep your little one comfortable.
More recently, our supplier, one of the leading bamboo supplies globally, has now made our bamboo material traceable. This means, as a company, we can be accountable for where our bamboo materials come from.
Our GOTS certified organic cotton ensures that the fabric is processed sustainably. By using this material, we make sure the cotton used in our products uses less water, less energy, and has lower carbon emissions.

Moving Forward with Petite Revery
Naturally, we’ve taken the same care of our products with Petite Revery as we do with Nest Designs. For example, the linen we’ve chosen for items like our Tencel Linen Long Sleeve Henley is made from flax fibre. Flax linen is a sustainable choice because every part of the plant is used - meaning there is no wastage. It is also one of the most biodegradable fibres that can be used.
Just like Nest Designs, Petite Revery is committed to eliminating the use of new plastic materials. For example, we use recycled plastic for our buttons. We love how adorable the colourful buttons look but also how eco-friendly they are and think you would agree too!
Doing Our Part for Mother Earth
While Earth Day is a day for us to participate and acknowledge this very important movement, we’ve made a commitment at Nest Designs to do this everyday, from our packaging to the materials we’ve chosen. We do this because we hope that your baby’s carbon footprint stays as small as possible - maybe even the size of their tiny feet when they’re first born. One day, we hope that the future generation can grow up in a world that is beautiful, healthy, and clean.
Let’s take action and be a part of this change together. Shop our eco-conscious products that feel good on your baby and are good for our planet.
